I'm about to pick fabric from my stash and make not one but TWO quilts from it. EEEK! I'm completely out of my element here. I usually order precuts or bundles from the same line- I don't trust my eye + brain enough. These quilts are for two sisters- one graduating from college and one graduating from high school. After looking and looking online, I never saw anything I wanted, Joe said "Shouldn't you have at least SOMETHING here you could use?" (with the understood "because you buy frickin' everything!"). So here's what I came up with so far for the older sister: (excuse the crappy pics, it was late and I had to use the flash- I'm terrible at that white-balance stuff!)

I love love love these together, but I feel like it's not enough- do I need to pull a green out from that navy Amy Butler print? I tried to put some blue with it but it was bad. I don't think I'd do red, through because of the pink... right? My second pile, for the younger sister, is a huge fail. Even looking at it the first time I wrinkled up my nose at it.

All of those colors are in the zigzag print but it just doesn't flow and 1 FQ of that zigzag print ain't gonna get me far!
So I regrouped and went through my scraps and came up with this:

I know there's no yellow in the bird print, but that's ok right? A friend mentioned that I should pull out more of the fuschia- would it replace the yellow or is the yellow ok because it's still in the citrus-y family?
Oh dear... I don't trust myself - I may just order some Modern Meadow and Aviary 2 and call it a day! :)

Just go ahead and trust yourself. Take the fabrics you have and fold them up smaller so you can pretend they are little cut squares all lined up like they will be in the actual quilt. Fold up other possibilities you have and switch them around. It is easier to tell if a fabric "works" or not if you don't have a huge overwhelming piece of it I think. I always pick my own fabrics and I like that it makes for a more personalised quilt. Good luck!
Okay so maybe I'm weird but I love the last combo...I think it's great the way it is. I think quilting is a personal thing. If you like it then trust yourself and just go for it. I've only made one quilt myself and I used charm squares so i'm not sure how much weight my advice holds...haha! Stopping by from Fabric Tuesday!
I like the thrid set too!
I agree- love the third step!
gonna get a ditto from me, too. love the last set, especially the yellow. = )
The third set is great leave it like it is. But that first set, get rid of the circle print, and pull more colorS out of the flowered print. The circles and flowers dont go well together, and you do need more colors, there looks to be many in the flower print. Another good way to pick colors, is find your main fabric, then look on the selvage for the printing color guide, the little color circles, and pick colors from those circles. Good luck, show us what you come up with when you add to that pile.
What a sweet gift! Okay I love your first set, and I don't think you need to add any other colors, keep it in that color family imo. And the third is a winner too! I think the yellow works great. Thanks for linking to fabric Tuesday :)
